MORBC Classic Trophy Day Print E-mail

The Inaugural MORBC Classic Trophy Day was held on Sunday 9th October, and although the turnout was low due to Bathurst being on, the racing was excellent on the new track layout. A minor amendment to it from the last club day meant a better flow through the middle jumps section.

The three qualifier rounds were run in the morning, with sorting for the finals done using points instead of laps. Craig Laughton TQed in buggy with a clean 200 points, as did Jordan Stewart in the truggy class. A short break for lunch (burgers from the 'mann'teen) and then the truggy final got under way. First timer Harry Tay got the best start, and lead for 4 laps before Jordan claimed his spot at the front which he held until the end 41 laps later. Brayden Bradshaw held 2nd spot for most of the race, and Bennie Van Huizen fought his way from the back of the field to eventually take 3rd spot.

Next up was Buggy B which Malcolm Namana blitzed, holding 1st position from start to finish. The racing in this final was pretty spread out, with Jason Picket finishing in 2nd place three laps down and Gennaro Caputu coming in 3rd, a lap behind Jason. Jason is off to Asia for 3 years at the end of the month, so now he'll have a trophy to remind him of MORBC!

Last was the Buggy A final, with Craig Laughton taking the lead early. A tussle ensued between Craig, Josh Pain, Martin Wolhuter and Brent Thomas, battling it out for the top 4 positions. Craig and Josh managed to get a break on the other two, and swapped the lead back and forth several times during a very close race. Martin and Brent continued their fight for 3rd spot, until Martin had to retire with a breakage in the 22nd lap. With Dave Simms never far behind though, Brent kep it steady and held his 3rd place for the duration of the race. Meanwhile the two protaganists at the front were going wheel to wheel, at one stage their respective fastest lap times only 0.001 of a second different!! At the end though, Josh got the break he was looking for and lead for the last 10 laps.

All in all, a relaxed and entertaining day of racing. All the results are posted in the Results section of the website. To see some great photos of the day from Harry Tay, or to comment on this story, see the forum HERE

WA State Champions - Josh Pain (Buggy) and Craig Laughton (Truggy)

Congratulations to the 2011 WA State Champions - Josh Pain in buggy class, and Craig Laughton in truggy.

The two WA drivers were pushed hard for their wins by by both local and interstate opposition, with a large amount of entries from our eastern state cousins. Two days of practice and qualifying under a typical Perth sun, and by Sunday the track was perfect for finals racing with an amazing blue-groove. A light shower early in the morning put just enough moisture into the ground, and with cloud overhead all day to keep the temperature down you couldn't ask for better conditions.

Both finals were intensely close and it is amazing that after 45 minutes of racing, there was only 6 seconds between 1st and 2nd in the truggy final and only 11 seconds between the 1st three in the buggy final! An awesome three days of amazing racing, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere - A huge thanks to all the competitors for making it a great event!
